Audio and Video Recommendations

Scope
Intended Audience: Anyone
Whether meeting with coworkers, family, or clients, it is important that your audio and video create the best presentation possible. There are many ways to get a favorable result. Below are tips for achieving the best result including some equipment that I recommend.
Lighting
Lighting is the most important part of your video setup. Good lightning will make a bad camera look better, and bad lightning can have the opposite effect.
Placement
Keep any large lighting sources in front of you. It is ok to place access lighting behind you if they are not too bright. But any bright sources should be in front. You also want to keep light sources far enough away that the light can cover you evenly. A smaller light will need more distance for the same coverage as a large light.
Equipment
Good: Selfie ring light with a tripod or stand. Place this directly in front of you, or slightly to either side. Many have a mount inside the ring to place your webcam or cell phone.
Better: LED light panels with diffusion. These come in one and two packs. If using one, place it as described above for the ring light. If purchasing two, place them at 45-degree angles at either side of you.
Video
This can be a crazy rabbit hole all by itself. However, all of the options boil down to either Webcam or DSLR. Regardless of choice, it is important to understand that your video platform will have the greatest impact. All video conferencing platforms will reduce video quality and bitrate to some extent. Unless you are also going to use the gear for other purposes, like YouTube videos, there is no reason to spend thousands.
Good (Webcam): The Logitech Brio UHD 4k Webcam has the best picture quality of any webcam I have seen.
Better (DSLR): Sony a6000 A DSLR will get you the best picture quality. However, it adds complexity as well. I still believe this is the best overall value. While you can use many models of various build quality, I'm going to stick with the prosumer model I use for its relatively low cost and great image quality.
NOTE: I also use, and recommend the older Sony a5100. It is a discontinued model but can still be found for $300-$400 and is compatible with all of the accessories below. As long as you don't plan on shooting 4k video, this is a very good option.
Accessories for DSLR
- HDMI Capture: Elgato CamLink 4k
- Dummy Battery: Gonine AC-PW20 AC Power Supply
- Cables: Micro HDMI to HDMI Adapter
- Lens: Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens will give a super crisp close image and nice blurred background.
Microphone
Audio is another area where there are thousands of options. Like lighting, your environment matters. Professional microphones can give the best sound. However, keep in mind that ambient noise will be picked up by expensive microphones. This is one area where I am going to give three options. All three options have excellent audio quality.
Good (Headset): Jabra Engage 75 This has excellent noise cancellation, audio quality, and is the easiest to use. It also comes in multiple configurations depending on your personal preference.
Better (USB Microphone): Blue Yeti Nano This is a great, yet easy to use microphone. It connects via USB and has multiple configuration options.
Best (Dynamic Microphone): Rode Procaster Dynamic microphones are extremely sensitive. This is not a good option if you have loud kids, pets or coworkers. You will need to mount it on a mic arm or desk stand. But the richness of sound is beyond compare. This is what I use for mostly of my recordings.
Accessories for Procaster
- Boom Arm: InnoGear Microphone Arm Stand. This will work with either the Procaster or the Yeti Nano. This mounts to your desk and makes it easy to adjust your microphone.
- Shock Mount: Boseen Microphone Shock Mount Holder. This will keep vibrations on your desk from coming through your microphone.
- Audio Interface: Scarlett 2i2(3rd Gen). This will connect your microphone to your computer via USB-C connection.
- Cables: XLR to XLR cable to connect your microphone to your audio interface.
- Amplifier: Cloudlifter CL-1 While the Procaster is sensitive, it is very low. This device increases the decibels without adding noise.
